Oulton Park Circuit, nestled within the picturesque surroundings of Cheshire, England, boasts a rich history as one of the UK's most iconic racing venues.
In the early 1950s, England boasted several motor racing tracks, but the northwest region lacked adequate facilities. Recognizing this gap, members of the Mid-Cheshire Car Club took initiative to address the situation. They secured permission from Sir Philip Grey-Egerton to develop a circuit on the estate of the Grey-Egerton family.
Starting in early 1953, plans were set in motion, and by August of the same year, the new circuit was completed. Measuring 1.504 miles, the layout was almost rectangular in shape. This new track, situated within the picturesque surroundings of the Grey-Egerton estate, filled a crucial void in the region, providing a venue for motorsport enthusiasts to indulge in their passion for racing. Oulton Park quickly established itself as a challenging and rewarding track for drivers and a favorite among spectators. With its natural road course layout featuring undulating terrain, sweeping corners, and thrilling elevation changes, the circuit offered a unique and demanding driving experience.
The inaugural meeting of the newly constructed circuit took place on 8 August. However, the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) initially prohibited public attendance, preferring to ensure the success of the opening event before allowing paying spectators. Despite this restriction, approximately 3,000 club members and their guests gathered as spectators.
The highlight of the day was the Formula Two race, consisting of 33 laps covering a distance of 49.6 miles. The race showcased the talent of drivers competing on the challenging new circuit. In a thrilling display of skill and speed, Tony Rolt emerged victorious, piloting Rob Walker's Connaught A Type to the checkered flag. This historic event marked the beginning of Oulton Park Circuit's illustrious journey as a premier motorsport venue in the northwest region of England.
By April 1954, Oulton Park Circuit had undergone expansion, growing to a length of 2.23 miles. Within a year of its opening meeting, the track underwent further development, extending to 2.761 miles in length. This expansion allowed for more challenging and varied racing experiences for drivers and spectators alike. 1959 saw Oulton Park becomes a regular venue for the British Touring Car Championship (then known as the British Saloon Car Championship).
What sets Oulton Park apart from many other circuits of its era is its unique design as a true road circuit. While many post-World War II circuits were converted airfields, Oulton Park's layout remained true to its natural terrain, with undulating landscapes and challenging corners that provided a distinct and exhilarating racing experience. This distinction contributed to Oulton Park's status as a beloved and iconic venue within the motorsport community.
There was a new look to the Cheshire circuit for the 1961 season, the pits being rebuilt into a two-storey affair with a concrete wall to protect the pit crews when working on their charges.
In Easter 1975, yet another circuit layout (The "Foster's" Circuit) was introduced, measuring 1.654 miles in length. This new layout added yet another dimension to the circuit's versatility, offering a different set of challenges and opportunities for racing.
Oulton Park continues to thrive as a highly sought-after venue, thanks to its rejuvenation under the ownership of MotorSport Vision (MSV). Following its acquisition by MSV in 2004, along with Brands Hatch, Snetterton, and Cadwell Park, in January 2004, Oulton Park underwent a remarkable transformation. Under the leadership of ex-Formula One racer Jonathan Palmer, MSV embarked on a comprehensive revitalization effort, bringing the circuit up to modern standards and breathing new life into its facilities.
2006 saw The circuit celebrate its 50th anniversary with special events and races commemorating its rich history.
The full circuit is 2.8 mi (4.5 km). The highest part of the course is Hill Top. Paddock facilities are reasonable in size with large areas of hard-standing and some power points.
Oulton Park remains a popular venue for motorsport events, hosting a diverse range of races, including British GT, British Superbike Championship, and club-level competitions.
